Dire Straits’ fifth studio album from 1985 was a colossus — the first record to sell a million copies on CD and a soundtrack to the mid-eighties on every continent. Mark Knopfler’s bluesy fingerpicking, Omar Hakim’s drum work and the unmistakable sound of “Money for Nothing” are framed by the album’s quieter, more reflective second half. The iconic National Style “O” resonator on the cover has become as recognisable as the songs themselves.
